The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Algorithmic Pattern

Fri. 12 September 2025 — Sat. 20 September 2025

New to Sheffield's culture calendar for 2025, Algorithmic Pattern is a festival and conference, bringing together researchers and practitioners curious about the practice and culture of algorithmic pattern-making.

People have always made algorithms to make patterns. So Algorithmic Pattern brings heritage arts and crafts – like procedural approaches in textiles, juggling, choreography, bell-ringing – together with those born in the contemporary information age – think live coding, generative art, e-textiles.

The Algorithmic Pattern team hope that it'll become a regular event, taking place every two years.

More details coming soon! In the meantime, join their mailing list.

The event will take place in two parts:

  • In-person in Sheffield, and streamed online: 12–14th September 2025
  • On-line, with in-person ‘watch party’ in Sheffield and potentially other sites: 19–20th September 2025 (provisional dates, may change)

The Greystones

The Weeping Willows (Laura Coates and Andrew Wrigglesworth) are a couple of old souls, steeped in bluegrass tradition and draped in gothic Americana imagery.

Cafe #9

Our idea of neighbourhood cafe perfection: excellent coffee, a wood-lined interior, lots of plants, chess, crosswords, ace music, warm cinnamon rolls, and friendly faces.

Bear Tree Records

Tucked away upstairs in the craft workshops of Orchard Square, Bear Tree Records was set up by Joe Blanchard – a familiar face to many who have flicked through various Sheffield vinyl racks over the years.

Society of Explorers

A curious, enthusiastic and creative collective of 14-to-19-year-olds, chatting, making and curating art from their Site Gallery base.
