In 1959, Kit, a 25 year old James Dean wannabe (Martin Sheen), and Holly (Sissy Spacek), a bored 15 year old suburban school girl, decide to run away together and live in a tree house. Within weeks of running away, Holly watches as Kit kills an awful lot of people. Terrence Mallick used to hold almost messianic reverence in the critical community. Although some of that lustre has faded due to some of his more recent work, Badlands is still a stunningly idiosyncratic work of genius. The stunning cinematography juxtaposed with shocking violence and troubling relationship between Kit and Holly still demands to be seen on the big screen 45 years.
