In Conversation: Dr Oladipo Agboluaje & Dr Kene Igweonu

Dr. Oladipo Agboluaje talks to Dr. Kene Igweonu, President of the African Theatre Association, about African diasporic identity on the British stage.

Dr. Oladipo Agboluaje is a British-Nigerian award winning playwright and academic who was writer in residence at The National Theatre. He is the 2009 winner of the Alfred Fagon prize for playwriting for his play Iya-Ile (The First Wife). Iya-Ile was also nominated for an Olivier Award. Oladipo has also published a number of poems and short stories. He now finds himself writing more for young audiences, setting plays in alternate worlds. His influences for this crop of work stems from a youth spent devouring science fiction and fantasy novels, and comic books. His plays for radio and stage include: Early Morning, Mother Courage and Her Children (African adaptation for Eclipse Theatre) and The Estate. He reviews essay submissions for the African Performance Review journal and has taught creative writing and post-colonial theatre at several universities. His doctoral thesis was on West and South African drama.

Workshops and masterclasses in Utopia Theatre’s Creative Hub are for people of African origin aged 16 and above.
