The fourth and final Out & About weekender in Sheffield's Cultural Industrial Quarter (CIQ) this summer is all about sustainability.
Head down to Pinball Park (opposite Site Gallery and the Workstation) on the weekend. This public open space is being transformed into CIQ Square for an exciting programme of free, family-friendly activity all about creative ways of being environmentally conscious. Featuring a wind-powered sculpture, wild fizzy drinks, how to turn pee into plant food and make ink from foraged plants, and lots more.

Both days –
- Hopes/Fears – 11am–6pm, CIQ Square
Artist Christopher Jarratt presents a brand new, wind-powered sculpture highlighting feelings and emotions around the climate crisis. It asks us to consider sustainability and our relationship to nature. Limited edition prints will also be on sale. - It's OK – 11am–6pm, CIQ Square
Artist and mental health advocate Leigh de Vries presents a 5.5ft typographic sculpture, aimed at inspiring individual and collective reflection. Share your thoughts with other visitors, chat with trained individuals, or add your own responses, thoughts and feelings on anonymous notes to the collective artwork. - Tones of Nature – 11am–6pm, Yorkshire Artspace: Persistence Works
Artist and printmaker Sarah Waterhouse is creating screen printing inks from natural and local sources such as food waste and foraged plants. See a new work created by the public with the inks, and try them out yourself with a hand from Sarah. - Wild Soda Pop Workshop – 12–4pm, CIQ Square
Ever wondered what yeast really is? Or how you can use it to make your drink fizzy? Pop down to this drop-in workshop led by Social Pickle, and make wild, natural soda in any flavour you want! Suitable for ages 5+. - Sauerkraut Workshop, 12–4pm, CIQ Square
Learn the art of lacto-fermentation with Social Pickle. Find out how you can awaken hidden bacteria and bring it into new lifeforms, and discover the meditative power of massaging cabbage! Suitable for ages 5+. - Social Pickle Mini Market – 11am–6pm, CIQ Square
Chat to Social Pickle about how they transform surplus, locally gleaned or foraged ingredients at their volunteer Glut Clubs. And pay-what-you-can for a jar or bottle of their products. - Social Pickle Activity Table – 11am–6pm, CIQ Square
Any great pickle, ferment, jam or chutney needs a great label. Invent names, design your pickle's outfit, and get it ready for the shelf! There'll also be activity sheets to use around the square and a fermentation log for all your bubbly ideas. - Pee to Plant Food Workshop – 1–4pm, CIQ Square
Wet Patch is a community garden in the ex-industrial area of Neepsend, created due to the lack of green space available for young people and marginalised communities in urban areas. Join folks from Wet Patch along with Ed Malus to find out all about the benefits and ways of harnessing something we all have easy access to: our pee! The drop-in workshop will discuss the current problems with human waste management and show how to put together your own urine processing system to create plant fertiliser. Suitable for ages 5+. - Communal Furniture – 11am–6pm, CIQ Square
Explore a new piece of adaptable furniture by the architecture and design studios McCloy + Muchemwa and Mitre & Mondays. Relax, meet friends, grab a bite to eat and take part in a workshop around it. - Radio Residency with Montez Press Radio – 12–4pm, CIQ Square
Broadcasting all weekend, experimental broadcasting platform Montez Press Radio will be bringing the the CIQ to life through music, chat and features responding to the idea of sustainability. - Murals across the CIQ – all day, various locations
Explore brand new murals by internationally recognised artists, painted on some of the most iconic buildings in the area. Pick up a map to discover them all. - Shapes of the CIQ – all day
Pick up your free family trail by Our Favourite Places and head out to discover the shapes and stories of the area – and colour in along the way. - Grab a bite to eat – 11am–9pm, CIQ Square
Relax, recharge and enjoy food and drink from local independent vendors.
Sunday –
- Seasonal City Earth Medicine Workshop – 1–4pm, CIQ Square
Join community herbalist Rasheeqa Ahmad (Hedge Herbs) and together make a remedy with healing plants that grow around us. Plant medicine can teach us about our ecosystems, our bodies and the relationships between them. It’s key to earth care and social justice around the globe. Suitable for ages 5+.
