The Working Party is a new monthly meeting at Bloc Projects for artists and creative people in Sheffield who identify with the word queer, starting this November with Querying Queerness.
Led by artists Richard Stott, Yuen Fong Ling and Damien Fisher, the event will take an experimental form – part reading group, part film club, part peer critique.
The word "queer", suggesting something "strange" or "peculiar", has been reclaimed by activists and scholars to express a political resistance to hetero-normative and homo-normative identities and politics. The Working Party is here to ask what this means to artists who are affected by these issues. It'll be a forum for exploring personal, political and cultural narratives, and for artists to discuss the contradictions and complexities in locating a critical position in their practice.
The Working Party is founded on the principal of an inclusive yet private and safe space for artists to freely discuss. Ideas and themes generated at these meetings will inform Bloc's wider public programme of talks, workshops and events for its Salon series in 2019.
