Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Huddersfield, Richard Morris is perhaps a little bit biased when it comes to the topic of Yorkshire, but aren’t we all!? This extensive book covers everything from Vikings to the Brontës; the miners’ strike to David Hockney. Morris digs into history to examine how England’s largest county took shape both geographically and sociologically. He investigates milestone moments like the Vikings, the Wars of the Roses and the Civil War, mixing stories of real people with travelogue, ecology, geography, myth and legend. Through an examination of Yorkshire’s history, Morris unpacks the region’s distinctive identity and how it inspired the likes of J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Girtin and Winifred Holtby.
The talk will take place in Millennium Gallery's Cadman Room.
