The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Shehla Ali

Our Favourite Places would be nothing without our contributors — a massive thanks to all of them!

Tell us about you…
My name is Shehla and Sheffield has always been my home. I am a freelance digital marketer, content creator and photographer. I spend most of my time being creative or fighting writer's block.

What does Sheffield mean to you?
A place where you can embrace the great outdoors but still enjoy a great cup of coffee from an independent cafe. The first time I really left the city was to go backpacking for five months but there’s nothing like a Sheffield vibe and I missed the Northern accents. We are a city that thrives on sport, art and music, and we have lots to be proud of.

What’s your favourite Sheffield place?
The Peak District and Botanical Gardens are great for unwinding, especially on a warm day when you can just enjoy the great outdoors. I love the fact that you can hike during different seasons at the Peak District and gain a different perspective. I’ve been able to experience some amazing sunrises and sunsets.

What would you do to improve the city?
I would love to see more creative spaces where people can meet up, and more independent cafes (can you tell I love coffee?). There are quite a few abandoned buildings that I think would make great places for photography and art exhibitions.
