Young Critics 2022

In May and June 2022, 12 students aged 14 and 15 from Brinsworth Academy’s Writing Club joined us for our first Young Critics programme.

Together, we went on trips to the Millennium Gallery and National Videogame Museum. The Young Critics explored these spaces and put their questions to people who work behind the scenes in them (shout outs to Leah and Gordie at the museum and Graham at the gallery). They then reflected on their experiences and formed their honest responses in a series of writing workshops.

This pilot of the Young Critics project was a partnership between Our Favourite Places and Rotherham Children’s Capital of Culture. Big thanks to Sophie Turner at Brinsworth Academy for the support, and to our ace guest writers Sile Sibanda and Akeem Balogun for running inspiring workshops.

The Young Critics: Blanca, Dasna, Ellie, Grace, Liv, Majeedah, Maliaka, Mallika, Mia, Nefeli, Star, Zunaira.

Young Critics: National Videogame Museum

National Videogame Museum

Our Young Critics took a trip to the NVM in June 2022. They played lots of games, met Sonic, and had a peek behind the scenes at how a videogame museum is run. Find out what they made of it in their reviews from a workshop with writer Akeem Balogun.

Young Critics: Not Without My Ghosts

Millennium Gallery

In May 2022, the Young Critics visited an exhibition of art inspired by spiritualism and the paranormal at Millennium Gallery. After exploring the strange and otherworldly art, they took part in a workshop with Sile Sibanda to write these responses.
