Cutlery for Afternoon Tea

Join Sheffield Museums online for an opportunity to explore the wide range of objects that wealthy Victorians used to dig into afternoon and ‘high’ tea, with specialist implements for all sorts of foods, from sardines to asparagus. Some Sheffield companies even had over 5000 different entries in their catalogues!

Nick Duggan from The Ken Hawley Collection Trust will take you through a menu of over 50 unusual objects that were made in Sheffield and then shipped around the world to adorn dining tables. Match the implement with the correct food and try to ‘taste’ the Victorian dining experience.

There will be time to ask questions after the talk, and you are also invited to bring along an object that relates to dining or food – whether you keep a family recipe book or an heirloom cake slice, please feel free to share it with the group for a friendly discussion.

This event will be taking place over Zoom. Please register via Eventbrite and you will be sent an email with joining details two days before the event.

This event is in partnership with The Ken Hawley Collection Trust and forms part of the Heritage Open Days programme.
