Evening Talk: Cecil Beaton – A Personal Perspective

Discover what it was like to work with the renowned British photographer, Cecil Beaton, in this special in conservation event with auction specialist Philippe Garner, and Sabina Jaskot-Gill, Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery.

Garner was instrumental in securing the Beaton Archive for Sotheby’s in 1977. He is an internationally acknowledged authority on photography and 20th century decorative arts and design, and has written extensively on 20th century photography. Garner’s books include Cecil Beaton: Photographs 1920-1970 (1996), John Cowan – through the light barrier (Schirmer, 1999) and Antonioni's Blow-Up (Steidl 2011). In 2011 Garner received the Royal Photographic Society’s award for Outstanding Service to Photography.

A major exhibition of Cecil Beaton’s work, direct from the National Portrait Gallery, is open at the Millennium Gallery in spring 2021. Featuring 150 portraits, Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things explores the eccentric, glamorous and joyful era of British cultural life during the 1920s and 30s.
