The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

12-year-old Bailey lives with her reckless dad Bug and older brother Hunter in a rundown graffiti covered squat in North Kent. Bug doesn’t have much time for his kids, and Bailey, growing from childhood to adolescence, seeks attention and adventure elsewhere.

One day, Bailey encounters a mysterious stranger named Bird, who on a journey of his own helps Bailey see the world in a new light.

A tender, striking and surprising coming-of-age tale from writer-director Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank), known for taking us into lived-in worlds with characters who often exist on the margins of society amid poverty and unpredictable circumstances.

Bird is a film that spreads its wings and soars away from its broken beginnings, in a flight of magical realism of hope and empowerment.

Starring Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Calm With Horses), Franz Rogowski (Passages, Victoria) and newcomer Nykiya Adams grounding the film with a standout natural performance.
