Join Bloc Projects to celebrate the launch of the new essay collection Experiments in Care and Collective Disobedience.
Edited by Joanna Wolfarth and Annie Jael Kwan of Asia-Art-Activism, the book features 18 pieces of writing by leading academics, artists, curators and researchers. It addresses questions on UK Black/Asian race relations and migrations, alongside global political entanglements and tensions. It also looks at the rise of anti-Asian/migrant sentiment in the UK in relation to the ‘hostile environment’ and the weaponisation of the Covid-19 pandemic. And it explores where Asia is situated within institutional narratives of British art, transnational solidarity, and how ‘diaspora’ can inform cultural activities.
The book is launching with a roundtable discussion at 4–4:30pm, with Bloc Projects’ curator Sunshine Wong and Asia-Art-Activism's Annie Jael Kwan and Yarli Allison. Annie Jael Kwan is a curator and researcher working between the UK, Europe and Asia, who also leads the Asia-Art-Activism interdisciplinary network. Yarli Allison is a Canadian-born, Hong Kongese art worker.
There'll also be drinks and East and Southeast Asian snacks.
Earlier in the afternoon, Bloc are also hosting Oracle Seed Dumpling, a free workshop centring East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) experiences. Led by Yarli Allison, the workshop will be a fun and safe space for restorative conversations and drawing, using participants' shared ESEA histories as a starting point.
