How does a Key Of She Jam work?
1. Arrive to Gut Level, and head into main space on ground floor. If you want you can grab a beverage from the Gut Level bar.
2. Say hey to pals, or find a quiet corner to get your bearings and take a moment to exhale your day
3. If you like; you can add your name to the list to play tonight!
The list is passed round, normally by Sarah or another KOS jam facilitator. Put your name and what you’d like to jam with- voice, instrument or instruments!
It might be that you just want to get up and make noise with your hands/found objects in the room: anything goes.
You can change your mind (either way) throughout the night.
4. We’ll start the jams, Sarah will pick some people off the list in a combination that allows a range of sounds.
She, or other jam facilitators will always double check people are ready and willing. You can say no when your name is called if you don’t feel like it.
We have Manon on sound who will help you set up your instrument if it is needed. We always have a basic set up on stage with instruments that can be borrowed if you don’t have your own.
5.Jam! Jams last between 5-7 mins normally. Anyone in the jam can start and the rest is up to you all. Normally, the jam just finds a natural end. Sometimes we use prompt cards or improv exercises to add different elements.
6. After 3-4 jams we’ll have a break, and then repeat until around 10-10.30pm. At the end we normally have a couple of open jams, meaning anyone who feels like it can hop up.
7. You can come and go out the space as you like - we don’t stand on ceremony, you don’t need to stay for the full session or arrive for the start but where possible it’s good to keep the energy of the room focused on the jams! :)
