Independent film exhibition and events company Odd Child Productions present their first screening: a family-friendly day of pop-up Black cinema. For their first event, the theme is joy and community.
Join them at the Dalton Court Community Centre in Nether Edge for a selection of three films throughout the day, including a special evening screening of Passing the Baton: The Legacy of the Windrush Pioneers. This 2021 documentary explores the legacy of the Windrush pioneers and their impact on Sheffield’s cultural landscape, produced by Danae Wellington (Nyara School of Arts) and directed by Paris North. It'll be followed by a short discussion with a group of artists and creatives connected to and influenced by the pioneering Windrush elders.
Earlier in the day, there'll be childhood favourite Tom and Jerry (PG) and 1972 Jamaican classic The Harder They Come (15). The Harder They Come is the essential rebel story of a young, gifted and black Kingston musician – Ivan, played by reggae legend Jimmy Cliff – whose attempt to lift himself out of poverty leads to a life of crime and passion. An explosive cult thriller with a killer soundtrack, that inspired a worldwide hit album that featured Jimmy Cliff's anthem The Harder They Come, alongside hits from Toots and the Maytals and Desmond Dekker.
So there'll be something for the kids, something to spark ideas, and something to make you laugh.
Hot food will be on sale, and will be included with evening tickets for Passing the Baton.
