With the Lionesses defending their Euro’s title this summer, Tudor Players are excited to bring a new production exploring the history of the women’s game to the Library Theatre in Sheffield.
In 1917 Essex, factory workers Sterling Ladies play for two seasons, never losing a match. "The Dagenham Invincibles" lead the extraordinary movement of women’s football through World War I. In 2023, injured footballer Maya watches the Lionesses progress through the World Cup, taking inspiration from the struggles of the past, as the two eras combine.
This new production was written by Amanda Whittington, who also authored Ladies Day, which enjoyed a successful run for Tudor Players in 2022. Director Joe Gascoyne-Thompson said: “Although this is a show about a football team, it is as much about the characters, the history and the struggles of women to be accepted as footballers as it is about the game itself. With the action shifting between World War I and 2023, we see the parallels between the pioneers of the women’s game and modern-day female players. We are lucky to have a talented cast, especially the young women playing the factory-worker colleagues making up the Dagenham Invincibles. The cast includes several familiar Tudor Players faces alongside some talented newcomers.”
The production runs from 10-14 June 2025, with doors opening at 18:45 and curtain at 19:15.
Tickets are available directly from Tudor Players – email tickets@tudorplayers.net or call 0114 285 3450, or purchase on the door.
