Although Empire was produced by Andy Warhol in 1964, it has never been screened in the UK. Until now. Yorkshire Silent Film Festival presents this rarely seen gem with a brand-new score from Monty Adkins.
The experimental film consists of a stationary frame of the Empire State Building from 8:06pm to 2:42am, 25-26 July 1964. The tallest building in New York City, the Empire State Building is the central character in a narrative as it moves from daylight to darkness. At the time, Warhol stated that the point of the film was to “see time go by”, and Empire has since become recognised as his most influential cinematic work.
