Artist Harold Offeh uses humour to confront us with historical narratives and contemporary culture. He works across performance, video, photography, learning and social arts practice. Head to GLOAM Gallery in Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter in December 2022 for his latest work, Creating Patterns.
The exhibition's name is taken from a 2001 album by seminal UK Afro-futurist group 4Hero. The album is a mix of hip-hop, soul, jazz, spoken word and break beat. Released at the turn of the millennium, it embraces futurist and speculative narratives – most embodied in the track Twelve Tribes. For this exhibition, Offeh uses the track titles and subjects from Creating Patterns as starting points for 15 new works. The exhibition features a series of A1 posters, a recording of a performance/lecture by Offeh, and listening stations where you can hear the original album. You're invited to draw, doodle or write while you listen.
Creating Patterns draws on Offeh’s interest in popular music and the structure and form of the album. In a previous series, Offeh re-enacted album sleeves images by a variety of black artists from the 1970s and 80s. Here, he continues his interest in embodying histories and archiving retro futures and speculative fictions.
Open Saturdays 12–4pm, or at other times by appointment.
