Hong Kong Future Diaspora is part of Eelyn Lee’s project Performing Identities, exploring what it means to be East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) in the UK today. With a focus on Hong Kong diaspora in Sheffield, the artist and filmmaker is spending 2022–23 building relationships, workshopping and co-developing the project.
Eelyn is starting with ideas around the ‘Chinese’ takeaway and restaurant and identity. She's invited UK-based Hong Kongers across two generations of migration to join her for discussions around the shaping, holding and re-imagining of identities. These collaborators include artists, researchers, martial arts scholars and fellow makers: Clara Cheung, Dr Wayne Wong, Jan-Ming Lee, Angela YT Chan, Anna Chan, Jonathan Tang and Franco Ho.
In October 2022, an exhibition at Bloc Projects will share works-in-progress to mark the quarter-way point of this collective journey. There'll also be performance and discussions running alongside the exhibition, sketching the shifting landscapes of the wandering Hong Konger through past, present and future.
