Join Neill Schofield from Friends of Parkwood Springs for a history walk from Parkwood Springs to Hillsborough Park.
You'll learn about the history of Parkwood Springs, including its time as a medieval deer park and the two Shirecliffe Halls that existed on the site – the first a farm, recorded in 1637, the second built in the early 1800s. Hear about Parkwood Springs village, the coming of the railway to Sheffield, industry and mining on the site, the local impact of the General Strike and Second World War, and plans for the future. You'll also see some of the fine views over the city and out into the Peak District.
You'll then walk down through Wardsend Cemetery on your way to Burrowlee House and Hillsborough House (now the library) – two contrasting houses, both built in the 1700s by the Steade family. You'll finish in the Walled Garden, dating back to 1779, when it was probably used to grow fruit for Hillsborough Hall.
