This relaxed, hands-on class at Sheffield Artist Maker Exchange will introduce you to the safe and effective use of some of the most common power tools used in furniture making and home projects. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a DIY tinkerer, or simply keen to gain practical skills, this session will help you build confidence and get comfortable working with wood.
Over the course of three hours, you’ll receive clear demonstrations, one-to-one guidance, and plenty of supervised practice.
Together, you’ll cover:
- How to choose the right screws and fasteners for your project
- Using a combination drill
- Working with an impact driver
- Sanding with a random orbital sander
- Cutting with a jigsaw
You’ll also learn how to set up a safe and efficient workspace, select appropriate PPE, and develop good habits for cutting, drilling, sanding, and shaping wood. By the end of the session, you’ll have the knowledge to avoid common mistakes, use tools with confidence, and start tackling your own small projects at home.
No previous experience is needed – just bring your curiosity and wear closed-toe shoes.
All materials, tools, and safety equipment are provided.
The session is lead by Jack Relton. Jack is a furniture maker and designer, crafting contemporary pieces from locally grown hardwoods. His work combines a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship with a modern, thoughtful approach to design.
