David Lowery’s loose adaptation of the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is notable for its striking imagery and performances, particularly Dev Patel, whose Gawain takes up the challenge thrown down by the ghostly titular knight, only to realise after a year of carousing that he must face his destiny and, quite possibly, his death. Lowery combines earthiness with abstract imagery to accentuates the mythic elements of the story and this strange Medieval world.
