Since spring 2024, Sheffield Artist Maker Exchange (S.A.M.E) has been creating a friendly, supportive facility for developing artists and designers in south Sheffield.
Based in Heeley – conveniently close to the Sheaf View pub for post-making refreshments – S.A.M.E runs on a not-for-profit membership model. Anyone who joins their creative community has access to shared workshop benches, as well as a bunch of hand and power tools, sewing machines, a kiln and more.
The facilities are set up for making with wood, metal, textiles and ceramics. They're currently at around 15 members – a collection of designers, makers, artists, hobbyists, architects and more – and there's room for more, if you're keen!
As well as space for members to use as they please, S.A.M.E puts on occasional events that anyone can head along to – from makers' markets to workshops in building confidence with power tools. You can even at times try your hand at making something to take home, with past workshops including a session making a small side table using offcuts left behind from members' projects.
Coming up at SAME:
- September 2026 – Makers Market x Clothes Swap (date TBC)
- Offcuts II (date TBC)
