Originally opened in 1936 thanks to the benevolence of a local businessman, Hathersage Swimming Pool is a traditional open-air set-up ideal for lazily bobbing along or for some dedicated lengths. Changing rooms, a viewing stand for events, a lawn to recline on and a beautiful old bandstand surround the 25m pool, whilst stunning views out towards Hope, Castleton and over Stanage Edge greet you every time you lift your head above the water.
During the heated season (March-October) the pool is a very welcome 28 degrees, perfect no matter the weather – who doesn't love swimming under the rain? It's open late for adults-only lane swimming on Monday and Wednesday, which gets a few Sheffielders hopping on the train after the 9 to 5. During the off-season (from November), the pool offers cold-water sessions for hardier splashers – and it turns out there are a lot of them about, since the pool managed to stay open throughout winter for the first time in 2017-18. Check the timetable before you visit.
Hathersage Swimming Pool also hosts regular events, including swimathons, swimming legs of triathlons and – most popular of all – a monthly night swim. The night swims run on the third Friday of each month from April to October, and are accompanied by live music in the bandstand. If you're around during the annual summer solstice, the pool opens for an extra special 24-hour swim – or wait for the New Year's Day swim amongst snow and ice!
Once you've worked up an appetite in the pool, nip down to the lido cafe. A favourite amongst local cyclists as well as swimmers for its strong tea, tasty bacon butties and teacakes, it serves as the ideal resting spot before exploring more of the Peak District's offerings.
If you fancy more exotic fare, you could do worse than pop two minutes down the road to Hathersage Social Club for a wildly indulgent waffle by the stream. Check their calendar of events as there is always something happening – whether it's a film and food evening, or a special "lobster love-in" dinner.
